FBCT History

Savor The Lord in Worship
Organized in 1897
In 1893, a small group of Baptist church members moved from Mertz station, near Mobile. They came to worship in a small building where Bellingrath Road and Highway 90 now intersect.
First Baptist Church of Theodore was organized in 1897. This was a result of Zion Baptist church’s mission with Reverent J.S. Lombard as pastor.
Since then, our church went through a lot of remarkable events:
- 1906 – a hurricane destroyed the church’s first building
- 1907 – a one-room building was erected, which was damaged by the 1916 hurricane
- 1920’s – the growing church’s Sunday School classes began meeting in the nearby Masonic building
- 1940 – the first Sunday School building was added
- May 31, 1931 – the dedication of the remodeled sanctuary and new Sunday School building was held
- 1950 – 51 – erection of the stone sanctuary
- July 15, 1951 – the new sanctuary was dedicated
- November 1983 – the challenge to build program to construct our current sanctuary began
- October 27, 1985 – the sanctuary was dedicated
- March 24, 1989 – the stone sanctuary was converted into a fellowship hall and was dedicated on Good Friday
Our church campus has three sanctuaries, two educational buildings, a Christian Life Center Gymnasium, and an office complex. We have been blessed through the years as we have become the beacon to our community.
